The first thing that struck me about this piece was the heaviness and weight given to the fish body. It is definitely a thought-provoking and interesting spin on the mermaid.
I love the texture of the scales and of the hair and fins as they mix with the water. I think the large and random texture of the blue water background distracts from the other finer/more planned textures. (I realize that this may just be the nature of the sketch.)
On a similar note, the rendering style seems to vary widely from the very carefully rendered and realistic torso and breasts to the loose and free brush strokes of the background to the more stylized scales. I don't know if this was intentional or not, but probably something to think about when you do the finished piece.
Carry on Alex! I can't wait to see what comes next!
I'm so sorry it took me so long to reply to your post! Thank you so much for the comments though! I've actually started the larger painting and it is definitely looking much different than the original sketch. I can't wait to post it so that I can get your feedback again.
Originally I did want to sort of mix textures and styles in terms of a looser quality in the fish tail and tighter in the body. But, now that I'm working on it on a larger scale it seems to be taking on a whole different texture.
I'm finally enjoying painting again though, so yay for that!
